My lamp
started life as some rusty car parts that I found in a barn. Some headlamps, two
support arms for the front wheels, a prop shaft, gearbox, car horn and some
metal tubing.
I began the project by welding the two support
arms together to make a base for the lamp. Then I cut the prop shaft I half and
put the gears from a transition inn between the cuts with some metal tubing. Then
I brought out some sheet metal and made a mounting bracket for the two
headlamps. Then I disassembled the two headlamps. I found some bowl like shapes
inside them that I could use to balance the proportions of the lamp, and make it a more open shape. I mounted
the bowl like shapes with welding wires. Before I wired inn the lamps I sandblasted,
polished and painted it. I painted it in black and kept some of the raw brushed
metal to give it a rougher look. I tried to create a balanced contrast between
the black paint and the brushed metal. When the paint dried I wired up the lamps.
I am not that pleased with the end result. The sandblasting devise I used wasn’t strong enough to get all the paint and rust of, so in some areas it’s rather rough. And the tape I used to mask was freezing tape. Not masking tape that I should have used (if I had any). So the masking is slightly uneven. im quite happy with the shape of the lamp. i tried to make the lamp in a mixture of organic and gemetric shapes. Though some of it is more geomtric than oraganic.
